Metal Foam


Usually open cell Al foam is produced by infiltration of polyurethane foam with heat resistant material. The polyurethane foam is subsequently removed by heating and liquid metal is infiltrated through the fine pore. AMPRI has developed a novel technique to produce open cell Al foam using melt route. 

Al syntactic foams reinforced with flyash cenospheres have been synthesized using the liquid metallurgy route. These foams attain 25-45% porosity with energy absorption capacity of 30-50 MJ.m-3 and crushing strength 45-150 MPa. They have potential for use as vibration control, electromagnetic shielding, energy absorption, casings, light weight sandwich panels etc.

Further work on synthesize Ti and Ni-Ti foam through powder metallurgy route using cenospheres as space holders is being carried out
